Thistle forced to settle for draw against Livi

The points were shared at Meadowbank Stadium on Sunday afternoon as Boroughmuir and Livingston played out a 2-2 draw in their sixth meeting of the season.

An early own goal followed by Ashley Elizabeth’s neat strike put Livingston in command inside 34 minutes.

Thistle did fight back, though, with a Becky Galbraith double restoring parity and giving Thistle new impetus.

However a winner was not forthcoming despite a number of second half chances, meaning the sides had to settle for a point apiece.

Boroughmuir started the game brightly with Cailin Michie firing over the bar in the opening minute, however found themselves behind on eight minutes when Erin Burns’ corner deflected off Fiona Gibson on its way into the back of the net.

The away side subsequently looked the most threatening, with Thistle’s next big chance not coming until around the 30-minute mark - Cara Borthwick and Galbraith linked up to good effect down the right, however the latter’s effort from inside the box was wide of the target.

Moments later, however, Livingston doubled their lead when Elizabeth coolly found the back of the net with a right-footed half-volley from the edge of the box.

Boroughmuir didn’t let the heads drop, though, and seemed to kick into gear after Livingston’s second. Borthwick was at the heart of two good chances for the home side, narrowly shooting wide of the top left corner from outside the box and watching as her effort was cleared off the line by the backtracking Livi defender.

Then, shortly before half time, Galbraith pulled one back for Boroughmuir as she was slipped in by Beth Macleod, saw her initial effort blocked, but calmly slotted into an empty net at the second time of asking.

Into the second half, it was all Boroughmuir in terms of goalscoring opportunities. Borthwick and Galbraith both shot wide of the target within five minutes of the restart, before Ria McCafferty’s corner caused havoc in the Livingston box - eventually cleared after hitting the post and a defender on the line.

Dion Young was next to have a go, with her effort gathered by Rachel Pirie just moments before Louise Mason clipped the crossbar with a strike from 20 yards.

As Galbraith headed wide from McCafferty’s corner on 70 minutes, it was beginning to look like ‘one of those days’ for Boroughmuir. However, the forward finally netted her second on 78 minutes when she beat the defensive line to get on the end of Amy Forbes’ long ball and expertly finished low into the net while one-on-one with the ‘keeper.

A good few Thistle chances followed in the final 10 minutes - Pirie pulled off an excellent save with her feet to deny Galbraith a hat-trick, and the offside flag chopped off what looked to be a last-minute winner - but Boroughmuir just couldn’t find the back of the net and had to settle for a point.

Up next, Rossvale make the trip to Meadowbank Stadium on Sunday 30th March after a free week for the Sky Sports Cup Final. Kick-off in that one is midday and we hope to see as many of you there as possible.
