Boroughmuir Thistle 0–5 Hearts
Boroughmuir Thistle’s Sky Sports Cup journey came to an end on Friday night as they were beaten 5-0 by SWPL1 opposition Hearts at Meadowbank Stadium.
The visitors made a fast start, opening the scoring just 3 minutes into the match. Hearts number 9 finished from close range from a cross from Jenny Smith to give Hearts the lead.
Hearts doubled their lead on 16 minutes when Lauren Wade lifted an effort over Beth Rennie and into the net.
Thistle faced a difficult opening spell against their SWPL1 opponents, with Hearts adding a third on 32 minutes through Erin Rennie, who volleyed past Rennie.
Wade then grabbed her second of the evening seven minutes later, firing a superb volley into the top corner to give the visitors a 4–0 lead heading into the break.
Thistle returned for the second half looking to respond, but Hearts extended their advantage six minutes after the restart. Speckmaier worked her way into the box before calmly finishing to complete her brace and make it five.
Despite the scoreline, Thistle continued to battle throughout the second half, showing determination against a strong Hearts side. Goalkeeper Beth Rennie was called up to make several important saves to deny the visitors from adding further goals.
The result brings Thistle’s Sky Sports Cup campaign to a close, but the squad can take valuable experience from testing themselves against top flight opposition on a Friday night under the lights at Meadowbank.
Full-time: Boroughmuir Thistle 0–5 Hearts.
