Thistle defeat Ayr in penultimate game of season

Boroughmuir Thistle defeated Ayr United 2-0 in Ayrshire in the final league game of the SWPL2 season with goals from Becky Galbraith and Beth Macleod.

Thistle travelled to Cumnock off the back of a 2-2 draw against Kilmarnock at Meadowbank last weekend. Ayr United went into the match on the back of a 4-3 victory away to Gartcairn.

Andy Enwood named an unchanged lineup from the team that started the draw v Kilmarnock last week.

The opening stages in the match were fairly even. Erin Sheehan, Rebecca Galbraith and Cara Borthwick all tested Charlotte Ferguson in the Ayr United goal in the first 10 minutes.

The deadlock was broken in the 11th minute. After some good play by Thistle down the right wing, a ball was played into the box and like she so often is, Becky Galbraith was there at the back post to head home and give Thistle an early lead.

Ayr United responded well and came back into the game. They started to get up the pitch and tried to create problems for the Thistle defence however they were able to get up the pitch with Holly Aitchison having a couple attempts on goal.

Thistle were forced into an early change just before the half hour mark with Cara Borthwick picking up an injury. She was replaced by Lauren Hall.

The home side had a really good chance to equalise when Clare Docherty had her shot go wide of the post.

Just before the break, Thistle had a great opportunity to double their lead through Galbraith and Aitchison as they both had shots blocked from the Ayr defence.

Thistle couldn't have dreamed for a better start to the second half, where they doubled their lead in the 52nd minute through Beth Macleod, who had come on just a minute prior. Ria McCafferty’s shot from a tight angle hit the post from a tight angle and Macloed was on hand to put the ball into the empty net.

Maria Novoa Torrente came on halfway through the second half and did well, getting about the attacking third and having multiple shots saved by Ferguson in the Ayr United goal.

Ayr United made changes and pushed to get back into the match late on in the match but Boroughmuir Thistle defended well and kept a clean sheet seeing out the match as 2-0 victors.

The result sees Boroughmuir Thistle stay in third place ahead of the final match of the season against Gartcairn at Meadowbank this Sunday.
