Six of the Sunday best at Meadowbank

Boroughmuir Thistle picked up a well-deserved three points after putting six past Ayr United in the first half.

Shortly after kick off, it became apparent that Boroughmuir were looking to be as dangerous as they possibly could be with the Thistle frontline relentlessly putting pressure on the Ayr United defence. Thistle did not have to wait long for an opener as Erin Sheehan turned and shot a rocket into the back of the net from 25 yards out three minutes in.

Boroughmuir did not take their foot off the breaks as Becky Galbraith’s shot was saved with fingertips two minutes later and Cara Borthwick rattled the crossbar within ten minutes. Borthwick did not have to wait long for her goal as she slipped into the box and calmly placed the ball into the bottom left corner in the 18th minute. Minutes later, Borthwick almost doubled her tally for the day but the flag went up for offside before she could put it away.

Thistle’s momentum started to pick up when Holly Aitchison lobbed the ball over the Ayr defence and watched as Athina Varnava fired her first Boroughmuir goal into the back of the net from close range to bring Thistle’s tally up to three for the day.

Just after the half hour mark, Aitchison was involved in a goal again as a delightful cross from her was met by Galbraith who picked it up and turned while under pressure to put it past the diving keeper.

Boroughmuir were not done for the day as they shut down any promising Ayr attack swiftly and immediately pushed up the park to give the Ayr United backline a bigger headache and that headache would only get worse when a fantastic solo run from Cara Borthwick cut the United backline down the middle. Borthwick cut the ball out to the wing where Louise Mason was waiting unmarked. Mason fired the ball across the goal front where Cara and the keeper jostled to get a proper touch on the ball. Borthwick won the clash and sent the ball across the line to bring her tally for the game up to two and Thistle’s to five.

Just before the Thistle fans settled down for the break, Aitchison pinged a long range freekick into the box that Galbraith brought to her feet while surrounded by Ayr United shirts and slotted it past a diving keeper just on the stroke of half time.

After the break, Ayr United looked hungry for revenge and pressed up the park to try and reduce the deficit between the sides. Amy Forbes stood strong at the back and used her strength to push the Ayr United frontline back and keep a lot of dangerous aerial chances at bay.

After a dangerous spell by Ayr, Boroughmuir got their grip on the game and continued to pelt the visitors’ goal with some agonisingly close chances. Borthwick made a brilliant run down the right hand side, slicing through the defence and only put a little bit too much weight on the ball; which would have set Galbraith for a hat trick, into the side netting. Fiona Gibson had the best chance of the game as her long range effort went over the keeper's head but not her hands as the ball bounced behind for a corner. Boroughmuir had another close chance towards the end of the match as Galbraith set up Holly Aitchison for a one and one chance but her shot was caught by the Ayr United shot stopper.

As the final whistle blew, it was clear to see how important this win meant to the squad. With Boroughmuir sliding up to 3rd place in the table and many in-game positives to take away from the sweeping six goal victory, it is certain that Boroughmuir will be looking eagerly at the upcoming fixtures list.
