Preview: St Johnstone (A) | 15/12/24

It’s back to league business after last weekend’s Scottish Cup victory, as Boroughmuir Thistle head to Perth to face St Johnstone on Sunday afternoon.

Andy Enwood’s side head into this - the final match before the SWPL 2 winter break - high in confidence after a 5-0 victory over Livingston secured their fifth win in six matches.

Victory over the league’s seventh-placed side would keep Thistle within touching distance of the league leaders and give the Boroughmuir faithful a much-appreciated early Christmas present.

The opposition

St Johnstone currently sit in seventh place in SWPL 2 with seven points from 12 games. They sit three points ahead of bottom side Ayr United but four behind Rossvale above them in sixth.

They have shipped the joint-most goals in the league (45) and have only managed to find the back of the net on 15 occasions so far this campaign.

Two successive 6-1 away losses at the hands of Kilmarnock and Hamilton in their last league outings make pretty grim reading for the Saints’ fans, however they’ll remain hopeful given they ran out comfortable 4-1 winners over Ayr United when they last played on their own patch.

A key player Boroughmuir will need to be wary of is Olivia Hurrell, with the number 10 having found the net on seven occasions this season and currently sitting joint third in the league’s top scoring charts.

Thistle have recently apparently managed to eradicate the giving away of cheap goals, and will know they can’t afford to return to their old ways and give Hurrell a sniff at goal.

Previous meetings

The two sides have already met this season, with Boroughmuir running out 5-1 winners at Meadowbank Stadium in September. Leni Parrish, Cara Borthwick, Cailin Michie, Robin Gallagher, and an own goal helped Thistle on their way to a relatively comfortable victory in that one.

Boroughmuir Thistle edge the overall head-to-head, with nine wins to St Johnstone’s five since 2014, and there have also been five draws.

In our four meetings last season, Thistle went undefeated against the Saints (three wins, one draw) and ultimately finished one place ahead of them in the league.
