Preview: Motherwell (H) | 09/03/25

Sunday sees Boroughmuir Thistle take on SWPL 1 side Motherwell in the Quarter Finals of the Scottish Gas Women’s Scottish Cup, with a trip to Hampden awaiting the winners.

Andy Enwood’s side come into this one in the best possible form having won each of their last seven matches, including defeating Dundee United in the previous round of the cup.

Motherwell, too, are enjoying life lately, with Paul Brownlie’s side having secured a top-half finish in the top flight and looking to book their place at Hampden for the first time in two years.

Team news

It was a good week for Emily Arthur who - after scoring a brace against Kilmarnock to help Thistle secure their seventh victory in a row - was named in the SWPL Team of the Week! The forward also picked up the Thistle fans’ Player of the Match award for her performance at Rugby Park, so she’ll be confident of impacting this weekend’s game in a similar fashion.

Elsewhere, Cailin Michie and Becky Galbraith also received nominations for league-wide awards. Michie is up for SWPL 2 Player of the Month after a stellar few games in the heart of the Thistle midfield in January, and Galbraith - who could return to the Boroughmuir starting line-up after serving a one-match suspension - saw her wonder goal against Hamilton nominated as a candidate for SWPL 2 Goal of the Month.

The opposition

Motherwell currently sit sixth in SWPL 1 after securing their place in the top half of the table ahead of the split. They’ve enjoyed a fairly solid league season so far, with 10 wins, 10 losses, and two draws out of their 22 matches.

Motherwell’s impressive five-game winning run - which included a 6-0 thrashing of Bonnyrigg Rose in the previous round of the Scottish Cup - ended last weekend when Glasgow City ran out 4-0 victors at Petershill Park. That was, however, the first time they’ve conceded more than two goals since mid-Decemeber, so Boroughmuir’s forward line will need to be on their A-game to get past a stern ‘Well defence.

At the other end of the pitch, Louisa Boyes has notched nine goals and three assists in the league so far this season, with the Scottish midfielder sitting 14th in the overall top goalscorer charts. There are also a number of exciting Scotland youth internationals spread throughout a Motherwell squad who may feel the pressure as favourites heading into Sunday’s tie.

Previous meetings

Sunday will mark only the fourth time that these two sides have come up against each other, and the first since August 2021. Motherwell emerged 4-1 victors in the SWPL Cup that day and have in fact won all three of the previous meetings, scoring 14 goals in the process.
