Montrose 13/09 Cup Game

Boroughmuir Thistle triumph 1-0 against first devision side Montrose in the second round of the Sky Sports Cup, continuing on from their winning streak in  the SWPL 2 this season. Fiona Gibson’s goal secured Boroughmuir’s place in the next round where they will have to face another top tier side as the only remaining second devision team.

The first 45 minutes were mostly played in one half, with Montrose putting pressure on Boroughmuir’s defence early on. Lauren Hall was crucial for keeping Montrose away on the left side and stopping their runs short of scoring. A fairly physical game was expected from the opposition, but it was Ria McCafferty who was shown the first red card in the 30th minute. With two shots in a row on target, goalkeeper Beth Rennie made two amazing saves which denied Montrose the opportunity to lead at Meadowbank Stadium.

0-0 coming back from half time meant any goal in the second half could be the winner, and after close calls from Boroughmuir following throw ins and free kicks, it finally came in the 65th minute from Fiona Gibson. Now Boroughmuir were leading with 25 minutes to go, and controlling the game much better than they had been in the first half. A substitution saw Emily Arthur back from injury, Leah Young got handed the third yellow card of the game, and after 2 minutes of added time the referee blew his whistle. Despite Montrose holding most of the possession and having triple the total number of shots, Boroughmuir had successfully knocked out the premiership team and are through to the third round.
