Boroughmuir Thistle forward Becky Galbraith has announced her retirement from football following the conclusion of the 2024/25 season.
The 35-year-old, who joined Boroughmuir on a one-year deal last summer, hangs up her boots after a highly successful 13-year career.
Becky started out her senior SWPL career across the city with Hutchison Vale in 2012/13 where a certain Andy Enwood gave her an opportunity to experience lots of first team minutes as a young player.
She also turned out for Stirling University during the course of her career, but is best known for her hugely successful years with Spartans.
Notching 70 goals in 142 games, Becky is rightly regarded as a legend at Ainslie Park and sits third in Spartans’ all-time top goalscorer charts.
Before making the “very tough decision” to leave at the end of last season, Becky contributed with six SWPL 1 goals and two assists and also bagged a crucial hat-trick against Livingston to help Spartans on their way to the Scottish Cup semi-finals.
Her time at Boroughmuir since signing last August has been hampered by injury, with Becky sitting out for much of the first half of the season.
When she has played, though, Becky has been a pivotal player in helping Thistle reach the quarter-finals of both domestic cup competitions and narrowly miss out on promotion to SWPL 1.
An impressive tally of 18 league goals (22 in all competitions) sees her comfortably finish the season as Boroughmuir’s top goalscorer and well within the top four in the league-wide goalscoring charts.
Even in her final game there was no stopping Becky’s route to goal as she netted an expertly-taken penalty kick to draw Thistle level against Gartcairn in injury time.
After announcing her retirement, Becky said: “I just feel it’s the right time and when you know, you know. After Christmas I realised it was probably time for me to retire - I wanted to finish on a high and I did!”
“I’ve absolutely loved it [being part of this Boroughmuir Thistle team] - it’s been an amazing experience. It’s been an honour to play for a club that’s women and girls only, and I think a club like this really needs the backing of everybody.
“I just said to the girls in the changing room that I owe them a lot and thanked them for helping me find that love for football that I had when I first started out as a young pup, as Andy would say.
“It’s a nice note today to actually finish my career with Andy - he’s a coach that I’ve always had a lot of respect for and I always had a really good relationship with him. When he gave me a phone call last season it was a no-brainer - he was the person I wanted to work with and finish my career with also.”
Boroughmuir Thistle Head Coach, Andy Enwood, added: “Becky’s been involved in the women’s game for a number of years and is a great servant to the game.
“It’s been really unfortunate for us that we’ve only had half a season out of her due to injury - if we’d had her contributions on the pitch during the first half of the season then things might’ve been a bit different!
“She’s going to be a huge loss to the team but she’s put in a shift and for a woman of her age to keep herself in such physical condition, shows that it can be done if the sacrifices are made and you’re committed to doing what you want to do.”
All the best for the future, Becky, from everyone at Boroughmuir Thistle!
